Upon starting my internship at Moss, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Not only was it my first internship, but the idea of working remotely was completely unfamiliar. Being a college student at TCU means everything is in person: in-person classes, tests, meetings. My school is big on keeping everyone connected and present. I have friends at other schools who take online classes, and the idea always felt foreign to me, given that my only experience with remote anything was during COVID, my sophomore year of high school.
My first two days at Moss were in person. The other interns and I were onboarded by Nicole, and the idea of being on my own after that made me a bit nervous. I was worried I wouldn't have the same connection you get from being in a shared space, or the ability to just turn to a coworker and ask a question.
Now, five weeks in, I can say I've been pleasantly surprised. Although I don't see everyone on a day-to-day basis, I've built real relationships with so many of my mentors. The nerves I had going into that first remote week went away almost instantly. Any question I had was answered with a quick Teams call. I've been able to learn so much, so quickly, and being remote has actually made that easier in some ways. I've shadowed numerous employees across tickets, payroll, and client meetings, and being remote means I can be anywhere, in any meeting, at any time.
What makes Moss special is that there are so many opportunities that exist outside of the day-to-day remote routine too. Next week, I get to join Nicole on a termination, and in just a few weeks, I get to host my very own Moss Minute podcast episode. When Steve told me I was in charge of the next podcast shoot, I was honestly surprised that I was being trusted with something that big. His guidance and mentorship have helped me feel confident in sending invites and getting the script prepared, and I cannot wait for what these next few weeks look like.
Working remotely has truly shifted my perspective. It really was nothing to be intimidated by, and if anything, it's opened up more opportunities than I expected. So if you're going into a remote job feeling the same way I did, give it two weeks. I promise it's not what you think.
