Week Four
I can not believe it is already the fourth week of my internship at Moss. This week I have found myself reflecting on how much I have learned and the valuable relationships I have built along the way. Each week has presented new opportunities for growth, but this week offered one of the most impactful learning experiences yet. It provided a firsthand look at one of the core foundations of Moss Consulting: professionalism.
This week, Nicole invited me to accompany her on a client visit to serve as an additional female presence in the room for the comfort of a female employee who was being placed on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP). Going into the meeting, I was unsure of what to expect. Employee relations conversations can be unpredictable, and I quickly learned that every situation requires careful communication and professionalism. During the discussion, the employee was responding to concerns that had been raised regarding her workplace behavior and language. While explaining her perspective, she used a derogatory term in an attempt to defend herself. I was genuinely surprised by the comment, particularly given the seriousness of the conversation and the circumstances surrounding her performance concerns. The moment reinforced how easily workplace language can impact not only professional relationships but also the overall culture of an organization. What stood out most to me was how the situation was handled. Nicole and the team responded with professionalism, composure, and respect. Rather than reacting emotionally or criticizing the employee, they calmly redirected the conversation and explained why the language was inappropriate and how it could negatively affect coworkers, clients, and the company's reputation. Their approach demonstrated that professionalism is not simply about enforcing policies, it is about educating employees, setting clear expectations, and maintaining respect even during difficult conversations.
This experience gave me valuable insight into performance management, employee relations, and the importance of effective communication. It reinforced the idea that professionalism is a skill that must be consistently practiced and modeled, especially when navigating challenging workplace situations.
